|
|
Culturally
and Linguistically Diverse Women in the North
|
|
Women's Health In the North (WHIN) has
prepared this resource for practitioners in the health, community and
welfare sectors interested in better supporting the needs of culturally
and linguistically diverse (CALD) women. The resource aims to
facilitate access to information about women from CALD backgrounds.
The resource comes in two parts; a demographic
profile of CALD women in
the north and links to key agencies that
can help with information
about CALD women and resources to support service planning and
delivery.
For more information about women from specific countries, go the Top
Ten Non-English Speaking Countries of Birth on the left of the screen.
The demographic profile is extracted from a major report published by
WHIN: Women in Melbourne's North: A Data Book for Program and Service
Planning in Health. For information about this report, contact WHIN on

Females (Per Cent) by Top
10 Non-English Speaking Countries of Birth Across the Local Government
Areas
(Source: Australian
Bureau of Statistics 2001 Census of Population
& Housing)
Comparing
the age distributions of women aged 15+ from the top 10 non-English
speaking countris of birth:
- Women
from Viet Nam, Turkey, Lebanon, China, the Philippines and Sri Lanka
comprise a relatively young population
group with the median age occurring in the
35-44 age group.
- Women
from FYROM comprise a slightly older population group with the median
age occurring in the 45-54 age group.
- Women
from Italy, Greece and Malta comprise an older population group with
the median age occurring in the 55-64 age
group. Indeed there are notably high
proportions of women from Italy and Greece in the 65-74 and the 75+ age groups, suggesting that women from these
countries are much older population group than other non-English
speaking background (NESB) women.

Females (Per Cent) by Top
10 LOTE Across the Local Government Areas
(Source: Australian
Bureau of Statistics 2001 Census of Population
& Housing)
|

Proficiency
in Spoken English
There are very clear gender differences in proficiency in spoken
English amongst women and men with LOTE. For each of the main LOTE
cited by females, the proportions of females (all ages) with limited
English language skills are invariably higher than that of males (all
ages). This suggests that women who speak LOTE are more likely than men
to experience English literacy barriers when seeking services they
need. Women with LOTE are also more likely than men to rely on family
or community members to engage with a service system delivered
predominantly in English.
Issues, of course, arise when it may be inappropriate for family or
community members to accompany women for services of a sensitive nature
(e.g. sexual and reproductive health, drug and alcohol treatment,
violence and assault crisis support, mental health issues). Ensuring
that women with LOTE have their needs met when accessing services is
therefore worthy of attention by local providers.

Recent
Arrivals & Emerging Communities
Information about recent arrivals is useful for
gaining insight into the numbers of women arriving in the northern
region since the last Census in 2001. Note that such information
relates to details at the time of settlement and does not take into
account relocation between local government areas or across regions
once settled.
The numbers of female (all ages) arrivals to the north by the top five
non-English speaking countries of birth are shown in the table below.
The figures are from the Department of Immigration, Multicultural and
Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA) and are for the period 2000 to 2003.
