Launch of Building a Respectful Community Strategy 2017-2021

Building a Respectful Community Strategy 2017–2021 is the northern metropolitan region’s second shared strategy for preventing violence against women. It was developed by the Building a Respectful Community Partnership, an alliance of seven local councils, 13 health organisations, three community service organisations and La Trobe University, led by WHIN.

WHIN CEO, Helen Riseborough, said the launch of the new strategy was a celebration of the strong collaboration across the region and the recognition that all parts of our society have a role in preventing violence against women.

“This event demonstrated the incredible commitment across Melbourne’s north to creating a safer and more equal world for women and girls. Many of these organisations are leading the way with some of Australia’s most progressive work to prevent violence against women.”

For an introduction to the Strategy, see the Infographic Clip.

Female Genital Cutting (FGC) Factsheets

WHIN has produced a new series of factsheets on female genital cutting (FGC), also known as female circumcision.

Each of the three factsheets is for a different audience: young women, women who have been circumcised, and health professionals.

The factsheets contain information such as why FGC happens, where it is practised, the different types of FGC, how it impacts on women's and girls' health, and where to get help and information.

Understanding the Link between Family Violence and Gambling

WHIN has produced a paper to assist health, social and land-use planners to consider how local governments can work to prevent family violence in communities where harm from gambling also exists. It describes relevant public health concepts and includes suggested actions and strategies drawn from current Victorian local government policies. Download the paper here

WHIN has also produced a one-page snapshot of the link between family violence and gambling. You can download it here.
