‘Side by Side’ is a respectful relationships and sexual and reproductive health program for communities affected by female genital cutting (FGC).
‘Side by Side’ is a respectful relationships and sexual and reproductive health program for communities affected by FGC. The program differs from existing respectful relationships education programs in that the information is delivered by promoting existing primary prevention of violence against women efforts in FGC-affected communities. At the same time the program addresses the issue of FGC in a sensitive, culturally appropriate manner.
Using cardboard leaves for students to write on their learnings from the program, project officers have developed an ‘evaluation tree’ (pictured at left). One student commented, ‘The best thing I learnt today is that men should respect women’s choices.’
‘Side by Side’ replaces the previous ‘Girls Talk Health’ (GTH) program and is currently being tested for delivery in various settings across the region.
The ‘Side by Side’ program is funded by the Australian Government’s Department of Social Services.
