What is 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based violence?

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign (16 Days Campaign) is a global campaign dedicated to ending violence against women and girls. The 16 Days Campaign runs from 25 November, which is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10 December, International Human Rights Day. These days were chosen to symbolically link violence against women and human rights and to emphasise that violence against women is a violation of human rights. For more information and resources about the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign head to the Respect Victoria website.

Won’t talking to young people about sex and consent encourage them to have sex?

No. Numerous studies over decades have shown that sexuality and consent education do not increase sexual activity or result in young people engaging in sex at an earlier age. In fact, research has consistently shown that educating young people about sexuality, relationships and consent can contribute to the prevention of sexual and intimate partner violence, the development of healthy relationships, the prevention of child sex abuse, improved social and emotional learning, and delayed onset of sexual behaviour.
